When you install tiles or stone, you need grout and you need to get it right. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.

Grouting is an important part of tile installation and choosing the right grout can make all the difference between an installation that looks and performs well over time or one that quickly deteriorates into a dangerous eye sore.

There are several different types of grout on the market today and we would like to show you three common types of grout used for tile and stone installations.

We will also discuss the colours of grout.

Firstly, what is grout?

What is grout and why do I need it? Grout is used as a filler between tiles after the tiles you are installing have set. Most grout is a powdered mixture of cement, lime, coloured pigments and sometimes sand that hardens when mixed with water and then left to set.

Grout offers many valuable benefits.

It gives your floor or wall a clear finished appearance.

It helps prevent dirt and debris from getting between and under your tiles.

It adds rigidity and strength to tile installations.

It is important that you choose the correct grout for your application. Start by measuring the space between the tiles.

If the space is greater than 1/8", use a grout that has been sanded. Unsanded grout will shrink as it cures and will not fill the gaps properly.

If the width is 1/8" or less, use a non-sanded, acrylic emulsion or epoxy grout so that you can completely fill these joints with grout material.

For grout joints measuring between 1/16" and 1/2", another option is a product that represents new grout technology. TEC Power Grout.

Sandy Grout

Sandy grout is suitable for large grout joints - any joints 1/8" or larger. The sand mixed into the grout helps to hold the grout in place in the joint. Sandy grout should be mixed to a consistency comparable to peanut butter; it will have a sand-like texture when cured. It is important to note that any excess grout left on the tiles should be removed before it cures.

Sanded Portland-based cement grout is the most commonly used type of grout and is recommended for grout joints larger than 1/8". It is available in both dry and premixed forms and should only be used after your floor has had sufficient time to cure.

This type of grout can be used indoors or outdoors for floors, walls and ceilings. It needs to be sealed to protect it from dust and spills as well as discolouration caused by wear and UV exposure.

Note: Never use abrasive grout on marble tiles. Sand will scratch the marble. Instead, use a grit-free grout such as the retailer's guide to tiles and stone. Grout does more than just fill voids.

"Sand-free grout is mainly used for walls, bath casings and countertops. In situations where sanded grout may scratch delicate tile surfaces, such as marble or other natural stone, the use of sand-free grout is recommended."
