Types of glass

The type of windows installed in large buildings are usually double glazed. They consist of two pieces of glass about 6 mm thick with a gap of about half an inch between them.

The thickness of the glass and the gap between the two panes depends on the building itself, the height, the size of the panels and the location of the installation.

The glass in high-rise buildings is much heavier than that in ordinary homes, due to the greater pressure the glass must withstand from wind and other factors. This is why heavy machinery is often involved in the installation of these glass panels.

How to replace windows on large buildings

Replacing a window on a large building can be done in a number of ways. The most common method is to use a suction cup device to remove the entire window. Glass suction cups can also be used to handle new panes of glass, provided you have the right tools with the correct lifting capacity to ensure a secure fixing.

The installer raises the window by forklift, cherry picker or lowers it down by crane. The glazier will then do what is necessary to loosen the glass.

Once the glass has been released for removal, the glazing suction cups are placed in the centre of the glass to ensure even weight.

If possible, the old glass panel is moved into the building, if not it is attached to a crane called a glass replacement unit for safe lowering to the ground. The new panes of glass are then attached to a suction tool and lifted into the open area of the window being removed.

The glass is then raised with the platform so that the installers can guide it into the correct position. Afterwards, they place the new glass on the supports and secure it from the inside and the outside to ensure it is stable.

Things to look for in windows in large buildings

When it comes to windows in large high-rise buildings, regular inspections are essential. It is best to be one step ahead of broken or damaged glass.

Finding out that one of the panes is faulty during a storm is not advisable because you have to be one step ahead when it comes to windows in high-rise buildings.

It is never a good idea to wait until the glass is completely broken in a storm, as windows in high-rise buildings cannot be replaced in adverse weather conditions. A missing piece of glass can have a devastating effect on the whole building as it will no longer be protected from the outside world.
