Cutting wheels

The best glass cutters have durable, sharp cutting wheels that make consistent, accurate scores. Most top models use tungsten carbide or steel alloy wheels to get the job done.

Tools with tungsten carbide wheels are the most durable and will produce the best results, they are usually more expensive than tools with steel alloy cutting wheels. Although tools with steel alloy cutting wheels will be cheaper, they may not stay as sharp for as long as tungsten wheels. Dull cutting wheels can result in incorrect parting lines, which can make the glass snap inaccurately.

Some glass cutters have a six-wheel turret with multiple cutting heads. When an old head becomes dull, simply rotate the turret to the new head.

Cutting range

The cutting range is the thickness of material that a tool can cut. Be sure you pick the right glass cutter for the job at hand. To cut thin pieces of glass you will need a tool with a range of 2 mm to 6 mm. For medium thickness glass you will need a tool in the range of 6 mm to 12 mm. There are also cutters that can cut thicker pieces of glass in the range of 10 mm to 20 mm.

Many glass cutters have interchangeable cutting heads, so you can choose the cutting wheel you need and put it on the tool. Multi-head tools allow you to cut more thicknesses of glass.

Automatic oiling

Lubrication makes glass cutting easier. You also need oil to ensure your cutting wheel stays sharp for as long as possible. Many of the best glass cutters have a self-lubricating feature. These models have an oil reservoir in the handle, a wick that connects the reservoir to the cutting wheel, and a compressible head. When the head is compressed during the cutting process, the wheel comes into contact with the wick, allowing oil to flow onto it.

Some models cannot be oiled automatically, in which case you will need to oil the wheel while cutting.

Ergonomics

If you are new to glass cutting, you may not realise how important ergonomics are. Putting pressure on a long parting line can tire you out quickly. Choosing a glass cutter with the right grip and size will make a big difference to your comfort and your control.

For beginners who are still building hand and wrist strength and endurance, a pistol cutter may be the best choice. As your hands get stronger you may soon outgrow this cutter, but it is a good starter cutter.
