Every tile installation tool requires a pair of pliers. These basic hand tools are necessary because almost every project requires at least a few simple curved cuts. Tile pliers are invaluable when you need to accommodate things like toilet flanges, tap valves, door casings or any other obstructions, as they allow you to make half-rounds, irregular cuts or even holes in tiles. Fortunately, they are also one of the cheapest tools you can buy.

The basics

Tile pliers are similar in design to pliers but have a sharp set of carbide tipped jaws. These pliers can be configured in many different ways, depending on the needs of the job at hand, but the standard variety is flat on the front. Typically, they are used to grip tiles while breaking off small pieces. This is where they get their name from, as they actually bite off small jagged pieces rather than cutting them like a saw.

It is for this reason that some people refer to them simply as "biters". They are usually used on tiles, hence why they are sometimes called tile nippers. But they can be used on porcelain, concrete tiles and most tile types, even very hard and heavy ones.

Some natural stones, such as slate, are particularly unsuitable for use with pliers, as they can easily chip or shatter. Pliers can also be very handy to help pull out nails from the floor after removing carpets in preparation for tiling. They can help break the edges of tiles when they need to be removed so that you can insert a chisel underneath.

Glass and mosaic

They are particularly handy for glass and mosaic tiles. Many artists and DIY enthusiasts use them to help break single mosaic tiles into smaller, unique shapes to decorate planters, wall hangings and address markers. While you can use the standard flat-tipped variety, you may want to consider wheeled tile pliers.

These pliers are also sold as 'glass tile pliers' or 'mosaic tile pliers' as they are actually made specifically for these lighter materials and for cutting glass strips into smaller pieces. You can easily identify them by their two different carbide scribing wheels. With their curved front end, the Parrot Pliers are another option to give you more control when working on smaller mosaics with intricate work and are the perfect tile pliers for cutting the inside of tiles.

Getting started

Using a tile clamp does take a little getting used to, so it is recommended that you practice on some scrap tiles first. You can mark it with a contour line similar to the one used when making a real cut. Placing the pliers parallel to the line or mark is the easiest way to do this. Remember to start small and gradually cut a little more with each bite. This will help prevent you from breaking the tiles.
