We are now ready to look at how to use the glass cutter in this step-by-step process. Remember that the glass cutter you buy will have some influence on the way this works. These basic steps will set you on the path to cutting glass effectively.

Step 1: Clean and prepare

Those who are experts in cutting glass will tell you that you cannot complete this project with dirty glass. When you have dust, dirt or grease on your glass it will make it more difficult for the glass cutter to actually go through the glass.

When cleaning the glass, try to use a glass cleaner that really gets the panes completely clean and clear. You should also make sure that all cleaners are wiped down before you start using the glass cutter.

Both sides of the glass should be cleaned, not just the side you want to cut. Leaving debris on the glass can also end up causing problems with the final appearance of the project.

As well as making sure that the glass is clean, you also need to make sure that the wheels of the cutter are clean. You can use a little cutting oil on the wheel to ensure that it spins more easily and can be moved around the glass with ease.

Once you have all your tools in place and everything is ready to go, you can move on to step 2.

Step 2: Find a flat surface

In order to cut your glass perfectly, you want to work on a flat surface. A flat surface allows you to cut the glass in a straight line with a perfect cutting angle. Most of the time it is a good idea to work on a piece of plywood, even on softer work surfaces such as fabric or newspaper.

Remember that you have to be careful that the final glass product is scratched. If the material is scratched you will end up having to redo your project. If you have an old sheet or something else that you can lay over your work surface, use it to prepare your surface.

Step 3: Measure out the cutout

Once your work surface is ready and your glass is ready, you now need to start measuring out your cut. You will need to use a tape measure and usually a framing square when measuring to get things right.

If you don't measure correctly, you may end up having to start from scratch. When you use a glass cutter, you need to draw a line along the entire length. If this dividing line is not accurate, along the whole line of the glass, your cut will be uneven.

If you want to match a piece of glass to a previous cut, you can use that cut as your guide.

When taking measurements for your replacement windows, you have to be careful how you measure the cut. You will most likely need to subtract about 1/4 inch to ensure that the window will still fit once the glazing is complete.

Most of the time, when using a glass cutter, you will leave the straight edge in place throughout the cut. Having this straight, smooth edge will produce a cleaner finished product.
