Step 4: Scribing

Now you are finally ready to start using your glass cutter. At this point you will start to scribe lines on the glass with your glass cutter. If you don't already have your gloves and safety glasses on, now is the time to put them on.

Only scribe if you have a straightedge or a line. You will need these as a guide for when you are cutting.

When you are scribing with a glass cutter you need to make sure you apply a little pressure as you work, especially if you are working with thicker glass. You can put a piece of masking tape under your straightedge to make sure it doesn't slip or slide around when you need it to stay in place.

Next, it's time to take some cutting oil and put it on the cutter wheel. You will place the glass cutter a good distance away from you and start to slowly pull it down towards you.

Move slowly, as pulling the blade back towards your body like this can be dangerous. You should be able to hear the glass start to scratch or scrape.

If you can keep the glass blade moving the whole time you pull it, you will end up with a cleaner, better looking cut. The noise will sound like the glass is starting to tear. If you don't get a perfect amount, be careful about running the glass cutter backwards, this can result in a breakage.

Always use enough pressure to pull the cutter straight down and let it make proper marks on the glass.

Step 5: Clamp the glass

Now that the glass has been properly scored, you can snap it. This is the part where you have to be very careful. The glass is very fragile because of the score lines you have created in it.

The best way to do this is to take a small wooden peg and place it under the glass score line you have just made. You will then take the palm of one hand and place it to the left and right of the score line. When you press down on either side of the score line, the glass will break.

The glass should split into two pieces and you don't need to twist or try to break the glass manually; it should just happen under the pressure of your hand.

Step 6: Clean things up

Although your glass is now cut into two pieces, there will probably be very sharp edges on either side of the cut. You can use your pliers to help remove some of the jagged edges. Alternatively, use fine sandpaper to help make the edges a little smoother.

Handle and manage your freshly cut glass very carefully; it will take a little work to get it completely smooth and ready for your finished project.
