Step 5: Add a drop of water
Boiling the heat-resistant suction cups in water for a few minutes will help to bring them back to softness and they will then be able to create a strong hold again.
Once this is done, you can add a drop of water to the sticky part of the suction cup. Distilled water is preferred, but you can also use tap water.
Then press your cup against the surface to hold it firmly in place. The drop of water will help to remove the air pockets from the sticking action. This makes for a stronger bond.
You can also do this after boiling the heat resistant suction cups. Get rid of the excess water by shaking. A few drops of water will remain and it will help push the air pockets apart while forming a seal. Don't wait long because if you let it sit for a while it will dry out from exposure to the air. Air drying will leave a mineral residue from the tap water.
Step 6: Add a small amount of oil
Adding a small amount of oil or petroleum jelly to the inner lip of the suction cup will increase the suction power. You can rub a little lubricant around the edge of the suction cup with your finger.
Although cooking oil is a safe option, petroleum jelly will also do the job.
Be careful about using too much. You only want to use a small amount. Excessive use of lubricant will cause the suction cups to lose their suction power.
Step 7: Remove the airbag by pressing
This step is easy if you have cleaned and prepared the surface and suction cups according to the previous steps.
Place the suction cups on the desired surface. Press firmly on the suction cup in the centre to ensure that there are no air pockets between the suction cup and the surface.
Apply this pressure for 20 seconds to ensure that no air bubbles are left behind. The removal of air pockets will give a strong bond to the suction cup and will remain strong until you uninstall it.
Once you have fitted the suction cup, let it sit for a few hours to allow the adhesive some time to set. No additional weight should be applied during this time.
Tip. Occasionally release any trapped air from the installed suction cups
From time to time, it is good practice to check how well the suction cups are sticking. Room air has natural variations in humidity and temperature, which may change the strength of the suction cups. You can do this by pushing hard on the suction cups every now and then. This will help to release any air that may have started to collect over time.
Bonus Tip. Undamaged sticker hooks may be a better solution
If you can't always check the suction cups, but need a way to hang things semi-permanently, there is a better solution. For example, when you hang a shower box, you can't afford to have the suction cups come off. You can use removable sticky hooks that are made for high humidity areas like bathrooms.
