Step 3: Choose a surface
There are a few things you must consider when choosing the right surface to place this clean suction cup on.
The suction cup may not adhere to certain surfaces because there are air pockets that prevent a good bond. This means that it cannot be used on textured, porous and curved surfaces such as car dashboards and plastic and metal grids. Likewise, curved areas do not hold the suction cups in place. To avoid an unsustainable bond, choose a suitable surface to apply the suction cups to.
The best surface for attaching suction cups is one that is completely smooth, flat and clean. The most suitable surfaces have proved to be those made of glass and smooth ceramic. Some of the other favourites are coated stainless steel, acrylic, slippery laminates and flat sections of hard plastic.
Want some ideas on where to stick the suction cups? As well as windows and mirrors, it sticks well to the front panels of most shower stalls and coated stainless steel appliances.
So, choose a clean, smooth surface to stick it to. Air pockets will be effectively removed from the suction cups, which will make them tight enough to hold up the object you want. Just be sure to check the weight recommendations for the suction cups.
Step 4: Prepare and clean the surface
You can ensure that the suction cups stick better by cleaning the surface so that it is dirt free and clean. You therefore need to clean the surface of your choice so that a clean suction cup can grip.
Wipe the area with a damp cloth and wash with soapy warm water. Any dirt or debris will prevent the suction cups from gaining a strong hold.
All you need is a damp cloth and a household cleaner, such as cleaning vinegar. Soapy water will also work well.
If you are using suction cups in the shower, make sure you have removed mineral deposits or soap scum from the shower walls, which can prevent normal adhesion. Use a shower wall cleaner.
You may have to do a thorough clean by scrubbing again. Double cleaning will eliminate the last traces of dirt.
Make sure that the area is properly dried before sticking the suction cups to it. If there is too much residual water, then soap and water stains will be created and the suction cups may not have enough grip on the surface and will fall off.
Finally, apply some alcohol and wipe with a lint-free cloth to ensure that the surface is free from oil and grease. This helps to make the surface ready for suction.
Note: Before using alcohol or vinegar, make sure it does not harm the surface. For example, most showers and window sills can be cleaned without worry. But if you want to use them to clean colour-treated surfaces, then you can test your cleaner in an inconspicuous place first, just in case.
