Transferring shapes to tiles

The shapes mentioned above can easily be transferred to tiles for cutting with a saw with this little gem.

It is called an outliner and has hundreds of fine 'pins' which, when pressed against the outline, create the outline which can be transferred to the tiles by drawing along the edge of the outliner with a pencil.

However, this tool has the disadvantage of copying the outline of your shape onto the tile in the correct position. This tool is great at marking out the correct shape, but then it's up to you to measure and mark the exact position of the shape on the tile. This can be quite tricky!

Making small incisions in the tiles

For all the small cuts that need to be made in the corners of tiles to fit awkward places and items protruding from the wall, such as pipes or sinks, a pair of tile 'clips' are required.

The key to using these is not to try and cut too many at once and all the blades should not be on the tiles at the same time.

One should try to cut half the length of the blade through the tile, to a depth of no more than a quarter of an inch. It is possible to cut very clean intricate shapes, but patience and care are key! It is possible to cut a full circle with these clips.

Punching holes in tiles

There are two ways to punch holes in tiles. You can use a small masonry or tile drill to drill small holes around the perimeter of the hole you need to cut, then insert your tile saw and cut along the edges to join the holes together.

Using this method, for neatness you will need a tile file to smooth out the edges of all the holes drilled. Alternatively you can buy one of the drill bits below.

All sizes of holes are neatly drilled, so you won't be frustrated every time by tiles breaking at the last minute. This particular drill bit can be adjusted from 20mm to 94mm and is ideal for bathrooms. The red fence around it is a guard to ensure that nothing gets caught while spinning on the drill.

As with every project, as well as having the right tools, it is a very good idea to practice first. Buy an extra box of tiles to practice cutting, which will pay for itself in the long run .... , a job done cheaply may have to be done twice!

Drilling holes in tiles

To drill a hole in a tile, first use a hand-held tile scribe to make a mark in the centre of the hole you need to drill. Place it where you need to make the hole and twist it so that it marks the glazed surface. You can then use an electric drill (off what a hammer would do) to drill the hole.

The drill should be the smallest you have to start with. You can then drill upwards until you have drilled the size of hole you want.

Most of the fixtures you use in the bathroom will need a red wall plug and a 6 or 7 mm hole, you should start with a 3 mm hole right at the mark you made, then go up to a 5 mm drill bit and then up to 7 mm. This way you will be less likely to break the tiles when you operate. Do not press hard on the drill bit, just press gently.
