Tools used for glass cutting come in a wide range of sizes, configurations and durability. In some cases, glass cutting systems are preferable to using handheld tools as they offer greater control and accuracy. One disadvantage of the system is the lack of mobility, which makes it impossible to use in the workplace and on the job site.

There are several factors to consider when making the decision to purchase a glass cutting tool. The most important part of the decision is the type of work to be completed, as there are tools for professionals and tools for weekend or DIY work.

Budget

As with the purchase of any type of tool, the price of a glass cutting tool is directly related to the type of work to be completed and the requirements of the job. Most high quality glass cutting tools cost between $100 and $300. Those tools that are less expensive are designed for hobbyists and are smaller.

Size

The size of the glass piece determines the size and necessary quality of the glass cutting tool. Larger pieces of glass require more working space to make longer cuts and they include cutting arms that reduce the need to move the glass to reach specific areas. Having a cutting tool with an arm increases precision and accuracy, making the process more efficient.

Type of glass

The type of glass is included in the assessment. Most glass cutters can be used for any type of glass, with certain cutters offering better performance on specific types of glass. Thinner glass, i.e. glass under 0.6 cm (15/64"), does not require a lot of force to score its surface and can be cut with lighter tools.

When the glass is thicker, e.g. 2 cm (25/32 in), more sophisticated tools are required; these are used for flat windows and mirrors. Cutting thicker glass does not require detailed cuts or precision and is usually done in a straight line. To meet the requirements of thicker glass, a heavier and more durable cutter will be required, as it allows the user to withstand greater forces.

Range of tools for cutting

Glass cutting tool manufacturers offer a wide range of tools to suit any glass cutting need. Sheet glass cutters are capable of cutting thicknesses in the range of 0.2cm and 0.6cm (5/64" and 15/64"). Medium thickness cutters between 0.6 cm and 1.2 cm (5/64 inch and 15/32 inch). Thicker, stronger glass cutters start at 1.0 cm (25/64 in).

Many glass cutters have cutting heads that can be changed to suit the application. They allow the user to select the right wheel to match the thickness of the glass. Multi-head tools offer the flexibility of using the same tool to cut any thickness of glass.

Oil

Glass cutting oil lubricates the blades of the glass cutter, allowing them to roll freely. Its use protects the blade and allows it to function for a longer period of time. Glass cutting oil is water soluble, non-toxic, easy to clean and non-corrosive. A wide variety of oils can be used for glass cutting, from mineral oil to diesel, as well as some commercial varieties.

Glass cutting tools can have an oil reservoir that is coated with oil while the wheel is cutting. If the cutter does not have a reservoir, oil can be applied to the cutting line to lubricate the cutter in case it scratches the workpiece. Another method is to immerse the cut-off wheel in oil before making the cut.

Cutting oil is not essential, but it provides a way to protect the cutting tool and extend its life. Professional glass cutters use a variety of techniques to apply cutting oil. They check their cutting tools carefully to ensure the quality of their work.
