Grout hardens naturally because it contains an additive that prevents it from absorbing water. Electric descalers, oscillating tools, and tile grout saws are effective but create a lot of mess. They can also damage your tiles if not handled properly. The best way is to soften the grout first.

You can soften grout for removal using:

sugar solution

When I first heard that sweetened water could soften grout, I was skeptical but decided to give it a try and surprisingly, it worked. However, you should allow the solution to soak in the grout for at least an hour.

A sugar and water solution is ideal for floor tile grout, but you can also use it on walls, spread with a dampened sponge.

Step 1. Mix sugar and water: Add one cup (240 g/8.5 oz) of white sugar to one gallon (3.8 L) of hot water.

Step 2. Stir the mixture: Stir until the sugar dissolves.

Step 3. Apply the Mixture: Pour the sugar solution generously over the grout to be softened. If the grout is along the wall, dampen the sponge and squeeze it into the grout. If the sponge sticks to the tile, allow the water to soak the grout, even for a few minutes.

Step 4. Wait a few hours: Let the sugar solution soak for several hours.

step 5. Scrape off the grout: Use your favorite tool to scrape off the grout. If the grout is soft enough, you can use a piece of wood or a brush to remove it.

step 6. Adding sugar: Add some sugar when you brush the grout until it comes off, and keep adding sugar water as you remove the grout. This will prevent it from hardening until you take it all out.

After removing the grout, make sure to clean the tiles thoroughly with soapy water, otherwise sticky tiles will be left behind.

tile grout

vinegar solution

Vinegar contains acetic acid, which is ideal for softening grout. The downside is that vinegar can sometimes stain tile, so use this method with caution.

Before pouring a large amount of vinegar solution on tile, you should test it on a small area to see if it causes the discoloration. If possible, choose a hidden spot so that if the vinegar ruins the tile, the damage won't be too obvious.

If your tiles have not changed significantly, you can use a vinegar solution on the grout. If you notice discrepancies in the tiles, you should try something else.
