Note: We use the concept that any flowing material can be considered a fluid and therefore a gas, such as air, can be classified as a fluid.

Buying a suction cup

Suction cups are not all the same and some are designed to be more effective on one surface than another. To determine the correct type of handheld suction cup or vacuum lifting device for your project, it is important to consider several key characteristics of your material and the size or logistical constraints of your project.

Considerations

Materials - Often the most easily identifiable feature of your project is the construction material. Insulated metal panels are a good example of a material to consider, as standard non-porous glasses may create unwanted marks on the material or fail to form a secure bond. The type of material is often helpful in determining the surface texture and finish (see below), materials like stone and insulated sheet metal often have rough or irregular surface characteristics, while most flat glass has a surface that is usually non-porous.

Surface texture - A key consideration when determining the type of suction cup to be used in a project is the surface texture of the material in question. Continuing our example above, the texture (ridges) on the surface of a seemingly flat insulated sheet metal can cause suction cups to leak, thus weakening the suction and, in the case of vacuum lifting systems, putting unnecessary stress on the equipment. In such cases, the use of a foam ring pad like Wood's Powr-Grip VPFS10T may prove beneficial, as the design of the sponge rubber seal can help facilitate vacuum on rough and irregular surfaces. In addition, a material like patterned glass adheres better to a medium elastic malleable rubber than a standard rubber.

Surface - Another key characteristic of your material is curvature or lack of it. The basic question to ask yourself is whether your material is curved or flat. If we recall that the lack of pressure caused by draining the liquid from the low pressure cavity of the suction cup causes the suction cup to adhere to the surface, it is important to note that the contact between the lip of the suction cup pad and the surface is equally important.
