Which is the best tile cutter? A manual tile cutter or an electric tile cutter? These are two of the best tile cutting tools for tile repairers. But which one you should choose depends on the specific job at hand, the material you're cutting, and the space in which you're working. That's why today we bring you a guide to choosing the best tile cutter for your project. We're here to help when it comes to the great debate of manual versus electric tile cutters. Let's get started.

Let's paint the picture. You're replacing the splashback in your kitchen. Or you're tiling the bathroom floor. But your tiles just don't line up. After an hour of frustration and a few fussy words, you're ready to call in the professionals. Nice move, right?

Stop right there. Tile cutting isn't difficult. Just because you're a DIYer, doesn't mean you should shy away from cutting some tiles. It all comes down to choosing the right tools for the job.

What tiles?

There are many different varieties of tiles. Ceramic tiles, clay tiles, and porcelain tiles are the tiles you often see in the shops. While these three types of tile are just scratching the surface of the legendary tile.

Tiles are made from sand, water and clay. These materials are shaped into squares and then baked in a kiln to remove the moisture. Porcelain tiles are made from a denser clay than ceramic tiles. Clay tiles are entirely clay. Ceramic, porcelain and clay tiles are either glazed for interior use or unglazed for roofing.

Tile types such as glass, cork, concrete and natural stone can be used for any number of other applications. There are no rules as to which tiles you may or may not use in a project. Although some tiles will hold their value better in certain environments.

Measuring the area to be tiled

Every project will have unique spatial challenges. Sometimes you need more tiles, sometimes you need fewer tiles, and still other times you need to cut tiles.

Accurately measuring the area to be tiled is essential to choosing the correct number of tiles for your project. Measure the entire area for boundaries, the inside of the diagonal, width and height. Next, measure a square of sample tiles. Use these numbers to calculate how many tiles you will need for your entire project.

Don't forget to take into account abnormal borders. Order extra tiles to allow for waste due to cuts and breakage. An extra 10% is usually recommended.
