Electric tile cutters

For larger jobs, an electric cutter may be a more suitable tool. Electric cutters are more powerful and can cut thick, heavy tiles, made from solid materials such as stone and granite. Electric cutters can grind through tiles with ease and can cut into a variety of shapes rather than simple straight or diagonal lines like a manual cutter. Electric cutters are great for larger projects and are most often used for commercial projects or large residential projects.

Determining the size and thickness of your tile cutter

Another aspect to consider when choosing a tile cutter is size. The size of a tile cutter is defined in two ways. Firstly, it must be strong enough to get the job done. If you are laying an area with heavy tiles, your cutter needs to cut fast enough and break strongly enough to create an easy and smooth cut. Secondly, the tile cutter itself needs to be able to have the correct length from one end to the other depending on the size of the tiles you are using. You can use a large tile cutter to cut smaller tiles, but not the other way around. The tiles need to fit into the tile cutter to be able to make the cut. The size or length of the tile cutter tells you how large a tile it can handle and should be indicated on the packaging.

Choose a tile cutter according to the material to be cut

The tougher the material you need to cut, the stronger your tile cutter must be. Ceramic or porcelain cutters don't need as much durability or strength, but granite and stone are extremely hard materials and require an electric wet saw or a manual sharpener. Hard tiles can also be cut with a hand grinder or wet saw, but the quality of the cut will depend on the type of diamond blade used. A project involving 12" tiles will require a small tile cutter, which can be fairly inexpensive. But when you get larger and thicker porcelain tiles, a larger and stronger tile cutter will be required, and usually as the length and strength increases, so does the price.

The hardness and durability of tiles are rated according to the Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI) rating. The rating ranges from zero to five, with zero being a tile that cannot handle foot traffic at all (wall tiles), to five being a tile that can handle extra heavy foot traffic (shops, entrance halls, hotel floors, etc.). Tiles are available in a variety of materials, including the following.

Ceramic

Porcelain

Terracotta

Slate

Marble

Granite

Mosaic

Glass
