3. If possible, keep and cut glass in a warm working space

A common question is "will it be too cold to cut glass"? The answer is that glass behaves differently when it comes to temperature. When it's cold, different glass can be tricky or even problematic to cut. However, when you cut glass at a comfortable level, such as room temperature, you will experience better results. If your workspace is not in a comfortable temperature zone, then you may wish to heat the glass before cutting or store it elsewhere.

4. Choose the smoother side of the glass for scribing

When it comes to art glass, it is common to find that one side is smoother than the other. By choosing the smoother side for scribing, you may find that you get a clearer line and a more accurate fracture. Why not try this on a couple of test samples, scoring first on the smoother side and then on the other side, and then comparing the two. Which one works best for you?

5. Use your whole body when cutting, not just your arms

To consistently achieve a uniform score line, make sure your body position doesn't bring your technique down. You should stand up, move away from the table and hold the glass cutter vertically (or tilt it towards your body in a small area). Then, by moving away from the workpiece, use your whole body, not just your wrist or arm, to achieve a more even score line.

Cutting curves in glass?

If you are cutting curves, you may find it beneficial to start your path from the inside of the glass plate. Then start at the corner of the table and, if possible, move around the workpiece as you cut. For best results, you should try to keep your pressure and pace consistent, whether you are cutting curves or straight lines.

6. Keep scores even by levelling both sides

You should try to score on both sides of the line to provide an equal amount of glass. Although this is not always possible, this technique will help you to prevent the fracture from flapping out at the edges, which can leave uneven excess on larger pieces of glass and jagged deficiencies on shorter pieces.

When cutting narrow strips, start with a piece that is 300% (4 times) wider than your desired strip size - then cut it in half and then in half again. This method will help you keep an even amount of glass on either side of the dividing line, which should result in a cleaner break.
