Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned glass cutting expert, here are our 9 top tips to help you achieve a cleaner cut.

1. Use the correct size grinding wheel and the correct angle for the thickness of the glass

The size of the grinding wheel determines how much pressure is needed to cut the glass surface effectively. A larger wheel requires you to apply more pressure than a smaller cutting wheel. For example, if you are cutting thin/standard thickness art glass, then a glass cutter with a 2.54 mm cutting wheel is best suited to your requirements.

If you find that the glass does not score correctly, or breaks even when you apply the correct pressure, then another important factor that can have an impact is the angle of the cutting wheel. The following wheel angles cover these typical glass types.

Wheels with an angle of 120° are best for thin glass 2-3 mm thick

Wheels with an angle of 140° work well with glass up to 8 mm thick - see products

160° angle wheels may be suitable for glass thicker than 10mm

If you have a wide range of glass cutters, e.g. 2-19mm, and you are not getting the results you want between different glass types. Then you may want to consider switching to a cutter with a narrower range. This is because not many multi-tasking tools achieve the desired results compared to tools that focus on completing a specific task to a strict standard.

2. Use glass cutting oil for better cuts

Using glass cutting oils, glass cutter fluids and glass scoring lubricants is the best way for you to achieve the results you are looking for. Whether you use them in a self-lubricating cutter, immerse the wheel in a bottle or apply the oil directly with a cloth or brush. This liquid will lubricate the edges of the wheel and reverse the process.

Makes faint lines more visible

Provides a smoother pass

Provides a cleaner cross-section

Extends the working life of the tool

Traditionally, those operating in glass kilns would use mineral spirits for lubrication. While this is a practical and low-tech method, it presents health and safety issues - from fire hazards and potential inhalation problems to causing skin irritation. By contrast, glass cutting fluids are smoother oils that also offer the following benefits.

Their viscosity is at the correct level for an oil-filled glass cutter to prevent clogging or pouring out of the cutter are easy to clean from the workpiece, including non-evaporative oils have a high flash point, which greatly reduces the risk of fire compared to spirits.

They are usually less damaging to the skin, but common sense is always a good idea - wear gloves, you are dealing with glass after all.

They are odourless to reduce the worry of inhalation* and eliminate the strong aroma of heavy smoke.
