Cut on the smoothest side of the glass.
In some cases, I prefer the look, colour or pattern of the textured side of the glass piece. I turn the glass over and cut on the smoother side, then simply turn the glass back over when assembling the project. If you cut on the smoothest side, the glass cutter wheel will have better, more consistent contact with the glass throughout the cut.
Start and finish.
Try to start scribing as close to the front edge of the glass as possible without dropping backwards from the glass. Apply consistent, medium pressure from the start. End the scoring as close to the far edge as possible without dropping the glass. Repeatedly dropping the edge of the glass will damage the cutter wheel and may cause the glass to shatter.
Use the correct tool for the job.
Use a strip cutter or a round cutter when appropriate. Accuracy is the key to professional quality artwork. These tools give consistency to your work. In addition, they save material by reducing waste and breakage.
When cutting strips, I cut more than I need and choose the best, straightest strips for my project. The excess goes into smaller projects, pot melts or free flow. Nothing goes to waste.
Whenever possible, I choose to use a running pliers rather than slotting or breaking pliers to break the glass off the board. The walking pliers provide the most reliable results. They work best if the glass being removed is at least as wide as the rubber-tipped pliers. When breaking off narrow or small curved pieces of glass, I choose slotted pliers because the narrow jaws fit in tight places and allow me to get close to the parting line.
Use a paper pattern.
Don't hesitate to cut around a paper pattern to add an intricate shape to your piece. This is a great way to transition from a strictly geometric design to a piece with a lively organic element.
The glass wants to break in a straight line. To cut a rounded shape we make a series or progressive curves and break the excess glass in steps until we get a glass shape that closely resembles our pattern.
When cutting around a paper pattern piece, get as close to the paper as possible without touching it. Beginners will often cut a wide safety halo around the paper. This just postpones the inevitable. Have courage. Go for it. If the glass is going to break, no halo, no matter how big, will stop it.
