One of the fastest and easiest ways to improve your fused glass art and greatly expand your design style is to develop your glass cutting skills.

The beauty of working with fused glass is its simplicity. Many people come to this craft with little or no experience of glass cutting. Because of the ease of making it and the wealth of information readily available, they succeed in producing attractive pieces from the outset.

However, if you are now tired of the simple cutting and assembly methods that got you started and are keen to move in a more advanced direction, then a small step up in technique is the springboard you need.

It may seem like a trivial topic, but the complexity of your project is directly related to your cutting confidence. In other words, the better you cut, the more likely you are to step out of your comfort zone and move on to more challenging projects.

Here are some tips to get you started.

1 Steady pressure.

Contrary to popular belief, it doesn't take a heavy hand to make a good score line on the glass. What it does require is consistent, medium pressure, from the very beginning of the scribe line to the end. The glass cutter should "sing" as it rolls across the surface of the glass. This is a pleasant, consistent sound from start to finish. It is not an intimidating grinding sound. A good etch is visible over its entire length. But it is also not a messy, thin splinters everywhere. Grinding sounds and splinters are a sign that you are applying too much pressure.

Many beginners start out hard, but as their hand moves further away from the body, the pressure increases. In this case, breakage tends to occur about 3/4 of the way down the score line. Beginners think that the score comes from the hands only. A good score comes from making your wrists, elbows and shoulders a rigid tool. This combination of strength and stiffness helps you to apply consistent pressure over the entire length of the score, even when it is well away from the body.

When cutting an unusually long piece, I turn the glass around so that I can cut from right to left rather than away from my body. This allows me to move my body with my hand and makes it easier to maintain the steady pressure needed for a successful break.
