When remodeling your home or replacing tile, removing grout can be a difficult process. Grout is usually made from a mixture of cement, lime, and colored pigments, which harden once mixed with water. This makes it a difficult material to remove and requires special methods to remove it.

So what are the different ways to remove grout from tile? To remove material easily and effectively, you can try the following methods:

1) Desizing equipment

2) Sugar and water

3) Water and wood

4) Steel wool

How to Remove Grout from Tile

Grout is used to fill the joints between tiles and to add stability to the tile installation. Due to its hard composition, it can be difficult to remove when you decide to remove it. You may also need to replace grout if it becomes moldy or difficult to clean, such as tile installed in a bathroom or kitchen. Here are some ways to help you remove grout from tile:

1) Desizing equipment

One of the most effective methods of desizing is the use of desizing equipment, and there are several types of desizing equipment on the market. Some of these devices include:

Hand Desizing Tool: You can use a hand desizing tool or a screwdriver with a flat blade for this job. However, this method is a bit tedious, so it's best to only use this method when removing small amounts of grout.

Oscillating Tool: The oscillating tool is more effective at removing grout in smaller spaces because it allows you a higher degree of control when using it. The tool has a special blade that removes grout in an oscillating motion and a cutting head that swivels for easier removal.

Reciprocating saw: A reciprocating saw with a desizing blade is another tool, available at most hardware stores, that will help you with this job. This tool is a powerful piece of equipment, so be careful when using it and start with a slow setting.

2) Sugar and water

In addition to using tools, you can also make a DIY grout remover using items around your home. For example, you can use a mixture of sugar and water, since sugar is abrasive and will remove grout without damaging the tile. Here's how to remove grout using sugar and water:

To make this solution, simply mix and dissolve a cup of sugar in a gallon of hot water in a bucket.

Pour the sugar and water solution liberally on top of the area.

Saturate the grout with the solution overnight.

After saturation, remove large chunks of grout with a wooden stick.

For finer clumps of grout, use a scouring pad dusted with some sugar so it acts as a gentle abrasive.

Clean the area with clean water and pat dry with a towel.

3) Water and wood

Water and wood also provide an excellent way to remove grout from tile since it won't scratch your tile. Be sure to use a piece of wood that is about ¼ to ⅜ inches thick with square ends for the process to work. Follow these steps to remove grout using water and wood:

Wet the area and let the water soak in for a few hours.

Use the edge of the hardwood to scrape the grout. If there is a lot of grout on the tile, you can lightly sand the area before scraping it with wood.

Use a nylon scouring pad to remove smaller lumps of grout.

Rinse the area with water, then pat dry with a towel.

4) Steel wool

Steel wool is also an abrasive material that can be used in place of sugar or hardwood. Just like the other methods, you'll have to soak the area with water before using steel wool to remove the grout. After the tile is wet, scrub the tile with steel wool, then clean and dry the area.
